The Alpha Scholarship Open

The Delta Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated in conjunction with the Delta Gamma Lambda Foundation, a 501-C (3) not-for-profit organization, actively promotes youth development through mentorships and educational programs that benefit youth in the Cincinnati area. Annually, we provide scholarships to graduating high school seniors, who have shown their determination to succeed through academic achievement and community involvement. These scholarships are funded largely in part by our scholarship golf fundraiser.

The 3rd Annual Delta Gamma Lambda Foundation Theodore M Berry Beautillion and Scholarship Gala provides financial support for programs and community service activities of Delta Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The brothers will host a gala introducing and honoring the achievements of outstanding African-American male high school students and recognizing community leaders who focus on youth.

The nurturing of the male seed is critical to ensuring their success in our society. The Beautillion program was designed to aid in the transition of high school to college. It is our reverent intent that programs of the Beautillion will leave footprints in the lives of the beaux who participate. The Delta Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., through its Foundation, has provided financial incentives to college-bound men for the past ten years through this innovative program called the Delta Gamma Lambda Beautillion.

The goal of the program is to provide individual mentoring and leadership training for its participants through programs, which emphasize scholarship, manly deeds, and love for all mankind. The Delta Gamma Lambda Chapter has long been a strong catalyst for social change in our community. The Delta Gamma Lambda Chapter was chartered in the Greater Cincinnati in 1947. It has been a beacon for over 60 years in the metropolitan area and nationwide.

The 9th Annual DGL Scholarship Golf Open

The Delta Gamma Lambda Foundation proudly present the 9th Annual DGL Scholarship Golf Outing.

The Delta Gamma Lambda Foundation is dedicated to making a difference in our communities. Our Scholarship Golf Open is an annual charitable event, which supports college bound youth, who have proven their desire to succeed, through academic achievement & community leadership. This year’s outing will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the Mill Course, 1515 Sharon Road Cincinnati, Ohio. The event will begin with a 1pm shotgun start and will follow a best ball scramble format The following skills contest are included:

The 18-hole "Mill Course" at the Mill Course facility in Cincinnati, Ohio features 6,376 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71 . The course rating is 70.0 and it has a slope rating of 120. Designed by (R) Dr. Michael Hurdzan, ASGCA, the Mill Course opened in 1993.

Save this date “December 4, 2010”. This December 20, 2010 will mark the 90th anniversary of Alpha Alpha Chapter at the University of Cincinnati. The esteemed brothers of Alpha Alpha Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. are honored to invite you to Cincinnati on December 4th as we celebrate our fraternity’s founders and 90 years of existence on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. So mark your calendars and make plans to join us.

Ever mindful of our place in the fraternity’s rich tradition held dear by those who came before us, we will celebrate our 90th anniversary by honoring the memory of Linda Bates-Parker by supporting the Linda Bates-Parker Scholarship Fund. Ms. Parker was a pillar of the Cincinnati\UC community and an American champion of diversity and education at the University of Cincinnati. Supporting the LBP Scholarship Fund will embody our status as grand civic organization leaders, promoters of academic excellence, and advocates for our University.

It’s our goal to raise $20,000 through donations from every Alpha Brother that crossed the burning sands at Alpha Alpha Chapter. Two hundred plus brothers have been initiated into Alpha Alpha Chapter since 1960. We are asking ever brother to support this lofty goal by making a tax deductable donation of at least $90 each as we celebration our 90 years of existence.

We are asking a minimum of $1 to represent each anniversary year of the chapter as we make this monetary gift to the University through the LBP Scholarship Fund. The scholarships created through this fund will provide educational opportunities for qualifying African American students. Educational scholarships are gifts that keep giving and will be an appropriate endeavor as we celebrate our existence on UC’s campus.

2nd Annual MLK Day Community Blood Drive

Last year, this event garnered over 100 donors and another 40 individuals who signed up for the National Bone Marrow Registry.

ABOUT PRESTON WATSON: Preston is a beaux in the 2009 Theodore M. Berry Scholarship Gala. Preston is a Senior at Northwest High School. He is a member of the Varsity Boys Basketball team which Preston has played the last 2 years. In his spare time Preston is a member of the Alpha Esquires youth program where he's been a member of 4 years. Preston attends Crossroads Baptist Church and is parented by Valerie Watson.

ABOUT HAKEEM MCGEE: Hakeem is a host in the 2009 Theodore M. Berry Scholarship Gala. Hakeem is an 8th grader attending Cincinnati Country Day School. He plays basketball and baseball for the school. Hakeem is the boys' representative for his class of fifty-four in the CCD Honor Council. Hakeem's other activities include playing the violin, volunteering for the Cincinnati Museum Center, and playing sports. Hakeem attends Inspirational Baptist Church and is parented by Greg and Lisa McGee.

Delta Gamma Lambda History

The Delta Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was chartered December 20, 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The influx of many new and young professionals in the Cincinnati area created a need to change the status and affiliation with the Alpha Alpha Chapter at the University of Cincinnati, chartered December 20, 1920. This valuable experience helped these men to provide a steady influence through the 1930's. Delta Gamma Lambda was established during the fraternity's era of "militant liberalism". During the era, the fraternity took aggressive action to eliminate segregation and discrimination against Negroes and to secure full civil rights.

On December 26-30, 1959, Delta Gamma Lambda and Alpha Alpha Chapters hosted the 45th General Convention. During this convention, Bro. Theodore M. Berry (General Counsel, 1937) presented the NAACP award of honor to the General PResident, Bro. Myles A. Paige. It was also the event where the announcement was made to the brotherhood of the passing of Jewel Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray on December 6th of the same year.

The 1950's thru the 1970's were shining years and Delta Gamma Lambda was successful in maintaining and owning a chapter fraternity house at 1012 Chapel Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. It served as a consistent meeting place and a dormitory for fraternity brothers. It was customary to meet twice a month; the 2nd Monday - Business Meeting; and the 4th Monday - Social Meeting. Also during this period the Alpha Wives Club provided amiable and dedicated support to the chapter.

The 80's and 90's were very productive periods for the Delta Gamma Lambda chapter as well. During this time the chapter established the Delta Gamma Lambda Foundation. It was created as a youth development and education entity with 501(c)3 tax status. The chapters' ability to raise funds for scholarship was significantly enhanced. The group has hosted several district conferences for Ohio and has hosted two conventions for the Midwestern Region.

Delta Gamma Lambda Chapter is in the new millenium of service for the Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky region. Among its many accomplishments, the chapter and foundation have contributed over $100,000 in scholarships to African-American high school students. The Alpha Esquire Youth Group was established in 2002 as a mentoring program for youth ages 8-18 years of age and has a membership of over 50+ young men annually. The youth group provides a conduit for the chapters' Project Alpha, Go To High School Go To College, and other youth development activities. It has utilized the Voteless People is a Hopeless People program to impact the local political climate in the Greater Cincinnati area by using door hangers and placing informational flyers in the local newspapers. The chapter assists in registering new voters each year and has worked to collaborate with other agencies such as Planned Parenthood, The Absitinence Project, March of Dimes, The West End & Melrose YMCAs, Cincinnati Urban League, and the NAACP of Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky.

In 2010, we continue to look for ways to spread the manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind in Cincinnati and beyond. Below are the listed officers of DGL, dedicated to serve in the name of Alpha.

The Service of Delta Gamma Lambda

For 102 years, service to the community has been central to the mission of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. The Delta Gamma Lambda chapter continues that tradition as we tackle such programs as A Voteless People Is A Hopeless People, Go To High School, Go To College, and Project Alpha.

Here are DGL's signature service projects:

The Alpha Esquires Mentoring Program - An open program for young men from the ages of 10-18. This program prepares young men for manhood by implementing workshops on Conflict Resolution, Goal Setting, Etiquette, Career Planning, and Study Habits.

The Theodore M. Berry Scholarship Gala Beautillion - Recognizes high-performing African-American males and our Alpha Esquires who are high school seniors and plan to attend college in the fall with scholarships and a rites of passage beautillion.

The Delta Gamma Lambda Scholarship Golf Scramble - An annual charitable event, supporting college bound youth, who have proven through academic achievement and community leadership, their desire to succeed. This event has raised over $100,000 in 8 years.

History of Alpha Phi Alpha

Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world.

Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the "Jewels" of the Fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.

Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were developed at other colleges and universities, many of them historically black institutions, soon after the founding at Cornell. While continuing to stress academic excellence among its members, Alpha also recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African-Americans.

Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community's fight for civil rights through leaders such as: W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, and many others.
